National Food Institute, Technical University of Demark invites you to Professor Ulla Hass and Professor Anne Marie Vinggaard's inaugural lectures on Friday 12 October 2012. Ulla Hass and Anne Marie Vinggaard are researching endocrine disrupters and will talk about the background, status and prospects of their research. Their research into endocrine disrupters is aimed at acquiring more knowledge of the effects of these compounds and human exposure to combinations of them, as well as at developing methods for predicting the effects of combinations of endocrine disrupters, also known as cocktail effects.

In our food, in the environment and through cosmetics we are exposed to chemicals that research has shown to affect our natural hormones and their mutual balance. Endocrine disrupters appear to reduce fertility, result in malformed sexual organs and increase the risk of breast and testicular cancer.

The National Food Institute's research into endocrine disrupters focuses on shedding light on the link between exposure to chemicals and declining reproduction in animals and humans. Over the years, research by the National Food Institute has shown that the risk assessment of one compound in isolation underestimates the risk to humans. A significant part of the institute’s research and public sector consultancy is therefore targeted at investigating and shifting the focus from looking at the harmful effect of one chemical at a time to the far more dangerous cocktail effects.

In her presentation, Professor Anne Marie Vinggaard will take press headlines as her starting point: What gave rise to this field of research? What is the burning platform? What mechanisms do the chemicals use? Professor Ulla Hass will talk about background, status and prospects with the emphasis on mixtures of endocrine disrupters and deal with questions such as how dangerous is the combination of endocrine disrupters? And what advice does the National Food Institute give the authorities?

Come and hear Anne Marie Vinggaard's inaugural lecture: 'Endocrine disrupters – the science behind the headlines', and Ulla Hass’s inaugural lecture: 'Mixtures of endocrine disrupters – a dangerous cocktail'. The lectures will be given in English.
