Fotonik supports smart grid and disaster recovery projects in the most innovative city of the world

DTU Fotonik supports two recently started research projects in Medellin, Colombia, the 2012 most innovative city of the world. Prof. Idelfonso Tafur Monroy, group leader of metro access and short range communications acts as advisor and collaborator for two projects on hybrid optical fiber-wireless communication infrastructure to support smart grid applications and disaster recovery.

Financed by the Colombian Government, Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Colciencias, the optical communication research group of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) has started two research projects in cooperation with the metro-access group of DTU Fotonik. The goal of the first project is to develop network architectures to support smart grid applications in Colombia, guaranteeing a smooth transition from legacy networks to emerging heterogeneous optical fiber-wireless mesh technologies. The timely generated knowledge during this project will contribute to optimize the operation of the distribution of electricity in the country. In particular, the communication platform under development will allow for transport of a high volume of data with low latency for smart grid applications. The goal of the second one project is to develop a similar communication infrastructure to be used during times of calamity, such as landslides or floods, to support rescue and recovery efforts.

During 29 April and 3 May 2013, Professor Idelfonso Tafur Monroy, visited UPB to hold seminars and lectures on transfer of knowledge and training in the design of heterogeneous optical fiber-wireless networks and research tasks related to the two research projects. Moreover, professor Tafur Monroy held meetings on exploring cooperation activities between DTU Fotonik, UPB, Universidad de Antioquia, the innovation agency of Medellin RutaN and the optical fiber network operator Internexa. The envisioned cooperation focuses on projects with large societal impact where the expertise of DTU Fotonik can be applied to and also where master and PhD students will be trained at DTU Fotonik.
