The Novo Nordisk Foundation has decided to grant 40MDKK to professor Lars Nielsen and DTU Biosustain in terms of a 7 years Laureate Research Grant aiming at explaining the Warburg effect through a detailed kinetic and regulatory model of central  carbon metabolism in cultured mammalian cells.

The grant will make it possible for Lars Nielsen to establish a strong research team focusing on developing advanced metabolic models.  An understanding of the Warburg effect may be used to engineer superior CHO and other mammalian production host cell lines for biopharmaceutical production and may be translated into new cancer drug combination therapies.  The project will be initiated during the fall 2015 and conducted at DTU Biosustain in association to the extensive ongoing CHO cell research activities at the center.
