Biomass Conversion and Bioprocess Technology

We work on the development of new, efficient and sustainable process technologies, especially using biomass as feedstock, for the production of valuable compounds. Our mission is to create innovative solutions that can accelerate the development of a bio-economy with potential environmental, economic and social benefits.

We develop Research Activities in four main areas:

  • Biomass fractionation (pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis)
  • Development of robust strains with improved ability to growth in biomass hydrolysates
  • Development and optimization of bioprocesses with or without downstream process integration
  • Biorefinery strategies, sustainability analysis and techno-economic assessment

  Within these four main areas, we develop studies on the following topics:
  • Development of technologies for biomass pretreatment and hydrolysis – Maximization of sugars recovery with minimal generation of inhibitory compounds
  • Extraction of acetic acid, protein, antioxidant compounds, and lignin from biomass by using different technologies including subcritical and supercritical water and CO2 processes
  • Detoxification of biomass hydrolysates
  • Fermentation processes using pure sugar solutions or biomass hydrolysates, with or without downstream process integration
  • Development of bioprocesses under adverse fermentation conditions
  • Evaluation of microorganisms tolerance to inhibitor compounds and development of strategies to minimise toxicity 
  • Adaptive laboratory evolution to increase the microbial tolerance to inhibitors, substrate, product and adverse medium conditions (temperature, pH,...)
  • Mono- and co-culture of strains
  • Development of biorefinery strategies including lignin, protein and acetic acid valorisation
  • Process optimisation and techno-economic assessment
