Biomass Conversion and Bioprocess Technology

We work on the development of new, efficient and sustainable process technologies. Our mission is to create innovative solutions that can accelerate the development of a bio-economy with potential environmental, economic and social benefits.

We develop Research Activities in three main areas:

  • Biomass pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis
  • Fermentation technology with or without downstream process integration
  • Biorefinery strategies and techno-economic assessment

Within these three main areas, we develop studies on the following topics:
  • Development of technologies for biomass pretreatment and hydrolysis – Maximization of sugars recovery with minimal generation of inhibitory compounds
  • Extraction of acetic acid, protein, antioxidant compounds, and lignin from biomass by using different technologies including subcritical and supercritical water and CO2 processes
  • Detoxification of biomass hydrolysates
  • Fermentation processes using pure sugar solutions or biomass hydrolysates, with or without downstream process integration
  • Development of bioprocesses under adverse fermentation conditions
  • Evaluation of microorganisms tolerance to inhibitor compounds and development of strategies to minimise toxicity
  • Evolutionary engineering (adaptive laboratory evolution) of microorganisms to increase the tolerance to inhibitors, substrate, product and adverse medium conditions (temperature, pH,...)
  • Development of biorefinery strategies including lignin, protein and acetic acid valorisation
  • Process optimisation and techno-economic assessment

Students from Danish and International Universities can do a research project at BCBT group. For additional information, contact the Group Leader: Dr. Solange I. Mussatto.
