Bringing bright minds together on black holes

Gamma ray bursts, black holes and neutron stars are some of the exotic, cosmic phenomena which more than 100 of Europe’s leading astrophysicists will be discussing in Copenhagen this week.

The researchers are coming together for the 7th INTEGRAL workshop which DTU Space is hosting from 8-11 September 2008. INTEGRAL is the name of a large European Space Agency astrophysical satellite which was launched in 2002 and for which DTU Space has supplied two X-ray monitors called JEM-X.

At the workshop, the scientists will discuss their latest discoveries concerning some of the universe’s most mysterious phenomena such as black holes, neutron stars, gamma ray bursts and double-star systems. INTEGRAL is built for observing these phenomena, and the advanced space observatory has, among other things, revealed several black holes which have remained hidden until now.

The workshop kicks off at Eigtveds Pakhus at Asiatisk Plads in central Copenhagen. The large group of astrophysicists will also be travelling to the island of Hven to visit Tycho Brahe’s old observatory, Stjerneborg, where the foundations for modern astronomy were laid.
