Tove Larsen, who has her master degree in Chemical Engineering (1988) and PhD (1992) from our department and now is guest professor in the section Urban Water Engineering at DTU Environment, has been awarded with the IWA innovation prize for the Blue Diversion toilet.
The Blue Diversion toilet is developed by EAWAG, Tove’s present work place, and an Austrian design company. Tove the project, which has been funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The International Water Association (IWA) has chosen Blue Diversion as the most innovative project in the applied research category in the Europe/West Asia sector. By winning the prize the project is qualified to compete in the World Water Congress this year.
The toilet has been created for developing countries where the access to water is not reliable. It is a dry toilet with separate urine and feces collection, but with an internal water cycle. The water is used for hand washing and cleaning of the toilet. It is treated in a gravity-driven self-cleaning membrane bio reactor for reuse.
