Mads Bonde did his PhD-thesis at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, DTU Biosustain, and is one of the founders of Labster Virtual Laboratories – a company that has now been granted a prestigious design prize.

Thursday, April 7, the virtual laboratory company Labster was honoured with a Danish Design Award in the category ’better learning’.

CEO Mads Bonde has a Bachelor in Biotechnology and a Master in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology from DTU and did his PhD-thesis titled ‘Novel Methods for development of cell factories and laboratory simulations’ at DTU Biosustain.

Labster offers students full-time access to a fully-equipped and highly specialized laboratory – something that often may not be possible in real life to reasons such as economics and security access.

Using Labster, the students can perform virtual scientific experiments from gene regulation, next generation sequencing or measuring cellular respiration.

Design and usability are key concepts

“A design award is something Labster is very proud of. Design is a big part of our product development and we would really like to use design to promote education both here in Denmark and abroad. Labsters products must both look good, and at the same time be user-friendly, so we are very proud to be praised for our design,” Labster states in a message.

Danish Design Awards are given to Danish design solutions that add value in a total of 11 categories and four special prizes.

In the reason for their choice, the jury pointed out that Labster is "ambitious and well-executed, and an example of how new technology can create a connection between the physical and digital learning.”

They also stressed, that the tool gives the teacher “the opportunity to engage and involve the students, leading the teaching situation to new heights. It is innovative and overcomes the challenge of getting highly specialized laboratory training out to the many and indicates how learning standards can be raised by combining theory with experiments.”
