Two prominent researchers from The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, DTU Biosustain, received awards at the International Metabolic Engineering Conference.
CEO at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, DTU Biosustain, Professor Bernhard Palsson won the Senior Award at this year’s International Metabolic Engineering Conference.
"This award is a great motivation to pursue creating new cell factories for a sustainable future"
Group Leader Dr. Irina Borodina, DTU Biosustain at Technical University of Denmark
The award called ‘International Metabolic Engineering Award 2016’ recognizes an outstanding career contributor to the field of metabolic engineering.
Bernhard Palsson is also Head of Section for ‘Network Reconstructions and in Silico Biology’, whose majority of activities take place at the University of California San Diego, UCSD.
The focus of this Section is on systems biology, primarily on the complexity of genes and gene regulation using experimental and computational methods.
Group Leader was granted the Young Investigator Award
Group Leader Dr. Irina Borodina from DTU Biosustain at Technical University of Denmark received the prestigious James Edwards Bailey Young Investigator Award in Metabolic Engineering.
”I’m very honoured and grateful to have been selected as recipient of this award. The success we obtained with engineering yeast cell factories is due to innovation and hard work of the whole research team and due to the rewarding interdisciplinary collaborations.”
“This award is a great motivation to pursue creating new cell factories for a sustainable future,” she says.
The purpose of the James Edwards Bailey Young Investigator Award is to recognize outstanding research accomplishments in the field of metabolic engineering by a young investigator, who “has advanced the frontiers of metabolic engineering through originality and creativity of experimental or computational concept application.”
Irina Borodina’s research group focuses on advancing the methodologies for metabolic engineering of cell factories for sustainable production of bulk and high-value chemicals.
The Center was well-represented
Scientific Director Professor Jens Nielsen was also invited to do a keynote presentation on metabolic engineering of yeast, and in total 10 researchers affiliated with the Center were invited to give talks.
Furthermore, 19 poster presentations were made by scientists from the Center.
- The Metabolic Engineering Conference is the leading conference for sharing state-of-the-art developments and achievements in the field of metabolic engineering.
- It is a bi-annual conference, and this year was the 11th time the conference took place.
- This year the conference was held from June 26-30 2016 on Awaji Island, Japan.
- Close to five hundred scientists from 25 countries participated in the conference.
