We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PostDoc to join the Yeast Metabolic Engineering group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) at the Technical University of Denmark.

The group headed by Dr. Irina Borodina focuses on metabolic engineering of yeast cell factories for sustainable production of chemicals from renewable feedstocks. We develop genetic engineering tools, which facilitate iterative cycles of strain development, and work on general methodology for accelerated rational strain design, based on systems biology-level data and modeling.

The position is in connection with a large research project YEAST-TRANS: Deciphering the transport mechanisms of small xenobiotic molecules in synthetic yeast cell factories. This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 757384).

Responsibilities and tasks

  • Successful candidate will study the transport of industrially relevant xenobiotics in yeast. The methods will include high-throughput screening and characterization of transporter proteins using Xenopus expression system and solid-supported membrane electrophysiology
  • Transporter engineering will be applied for optimizing yeast host towards bio-based production of selected chemicals
  • The candidate will publish her/his research results in international peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences and seminars. Patenting activities can also be expected
  • The successful candidate will also contribute to researcher training and to the internal collaboration at the Center and external collaboration with international industrial and academic partners.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

Further qualifications:
  • PhD in Biotechnology, Bioengineering or Molecular Biology
  • Excellent track-record of publications and other scientific achievements
  • Hands-on expertise with Xenopus expression system
  • Hands-on expertise with electrophysiological methods for transporter characterization
  • Experience with writing research grants
  • Strong work ethic and motivation to succeed within a competitive research field
  • Team spirit and excellent collaboration skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The post of research scientist is a permanent post as part of which the employee after a maximum of 4 years transfers to a position as senior research scientist provided that the employee is recommended for assessment and is deemed qualified.
