Biomass Conversion and Bioprocess Technology

Biomass use for the production of fuels and chemicals is considered crucial nowadays to ensure a sustainable low-carbon economy for the future.

Dr. Mussatto's group focuses on the development of new, efficient and more sustainable process technologies to convert biomass into valuable products.

"Our mission is to create innovative solutions that can accelerate the development of a bio-economy with potential environmental, economic, and social benefits".

Our research activities fall in three main areas:

  • Biomass pretreatment and hydrolysis
  • Fermentation technology with or without downstream process integration
  • Biorefinery strategies and Techno-economic assessment

Within these three main areas, we develop studies on the following topics:

  • Development of technologies for biomass pretreatment and hydrolysis – Maximization of sugars recovery with minimal generation of inhibitory compounds
  • Removal of acetic acid from biomass by using different technologies including alkaline, subcritical and supercritical processes
  • Extraction of protein, antioxidant compounds, and lignin from biomass
  • Destoxification of biomass hydrolysates
  • Development of fermentation processes using pure sugar solutions or biomass hydrolysates, with or without downstream process integration
  • Bioprocess development using yeast strains under adverse fermentation conditions
  • Evaluation of microorganism’s tolerance to inhibitor compounds and development of strategies to minimize toxicity
  • Adaptive laboratory evolution and stability of microorganisms
  • Process optimization and scale-up
  • Biorefinery and lignin valorization
  • Techno-economic assessment
